Day 4
I had a pretty rough start to day four. I had my usual breakfast, then I realized my wallet was missing. I almost cried. I'm the type of person that is on edge and ready to scream in a stressful situation. I did calm down afterwards. I called the bank and deactivated my card. Thankfully my host mom was very understanding and offered to let me borrow 100 euro. At 11:00 a.m. my class met near old AIB for our Middle Rhine Valley bonding trip. Our first stop was at a ropes climbing course in Kletterwald Lauschhütte. I was determined to try blue, their easiest level. In the climbing course you are wearing a harness at about 20 feet above ground, you then move from tree to tree by overcoming different challenges. I was especially scared because it had been raining earlier, my shoes were wet and the wood was very slippery. One of the sections included a wooden surfboard that would slide from point A to point B. Once you got across you had to catch a rope on the other side to pull yourself up on the platform. In the final step you zip line and get off.
That evening, we headed to our hostel in Stahleck Castle, a fortified castle built during the 12th century on the orders of archbishop of cologne. It was rebuilt in the 20th century after being destroyed in the 17th century. The roads near Stahleck are curvy and narrow. Steep hillsides are lined with vineyards that make you wonder how on earth people walk without rolling down. My room had four bunk beds with a view of the Rhine River. Germany is wonderful. The first thing I wanted to do was share my experience with my family. Three phone calls later dinner was served. Our stay at the hostel was an excellent experience.
Day 5
On the morning of day 5, we walked down to Bacharach, a 13th century town on the banks of the Rhine River. We explored for about 30 minutes, walked into shops and took pictures. We departed to Braubach by boat.
