48 Hours in New Orleans

Here's my itinerary on how to spend 48 hours in New Orleans with friends and family.

Day 1

Swamp Tour

The first activity we did in New Orleans was take a Swamp Tour through Jean Laffitte National Historical Park Preserve. We got to experience local wildlife and fauna, and at the end of the tour, we were able to take turns holding a baby alligator. Overall our tour was informative and entertaining because of a very intelligent and small man aptly named "Lil Lou". I recommend booking with Jean Laffitte Swamp Tours and Airboat Tours .

PJ's Coffee

After riding through the NOLA bayou with our alligator friends we took an Uber to PJ's Coffee on Charles Streer. My friend Karynna and I couldn't miss the chance of trying this local coffee shop. I ordered a triple shot of espresso on ice with creme and honey while Karynna ordered a Praline and Creme Latte.

The National WWII Museum

After PJ's coffee we took bus route 11 on Magazine St. to The National WWII Museum. You can download the GoMobile App and purchase a one day Jazzy pass ($3) or a three day Jazzy pass ($9) to access buses and streetcars for moving about and around the city. This museum is full of amazing exhibits including the D-Day invasion on Normandy, Road to Berlin and Road to Tokyo. Kasey's favorite part of the museum was the Enigma Machine , a device used by Nazi Germany during WWII for communication encryption.

You can have lunch inside the museum, walk a block away to Flamingo A-Go-Go, or walk to Ugly Dog Saloon & BBQ.

Garden District Mansions

From The National WWII Museum we took Bus Route 11 to the Garden District. Here you will find beautiful mansions and Lafayette Cemetery No. 1. The Garden District is best experienced by walking through the streets. I suggest packing a water bottle, sunscreen and an umbrella. You may book walking tours through Groupon or simply take a stroll with your family.

French Quarter

After strolling through the Garden District take ST. Charles Street Car to the French Quarter. Riding in the streetcar with the windows down was a really fun experience. This was my favorite part of the trip. New Orleans weather is hot and humid during the summer months it is also rainy in the afternoons so don't forget to pack an umbrella or poncho! In the French Quarter, Bourbon St. is a popular destination for drinking and night life extending thirteen blocks. Frenchmen Street is also popular for its bars, Jazz music and art markets. I highly recommend visiting Jackson Square while in the area as well. It is a very beautiful plaza overlooking the Mississippi River.

Day 2

Breakfast at Satsuma Cafe

In the Bywater District we had breakfast at Satsuma Cafe. I ordered an Iced Espresso, a Satsuma Plate and a Special Pancake with honey goat cheese. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, great coffee, and food. Another great option is Cafe Du Monde.

Louis Armstrong Park

Cemetery Tour

After breakfast we took a tour with French Quarter Phantoms Cemetery Tour. Before our Tour we walked around the Louis Armstrong Park. We picked up our tickets at Voodoo Lounge. Before the tour starts you can get a Hurricane drink. Our Tour Guide Robert showed us around St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, he was very knowledgeable about the history and was also very humorous. Some of the graves we saw included none other than Nicholas Cage's grave, and the famous Voodoo Priestess Marie Laveau.

The Audubon Park

The Audubon Nature Institute includes a Zoo, Aquarium, Butterfly Garden and, Insectarium. Overall, the zoo is quite large with many exhibits to see. The zoo hosted different species of several animals including African and Asian primates, as well as exotic cats, and Asian elephants. The park also includes a water-park which is a nice way to cool off from the summer heat and humidity. Lastly, the park also had several gift shops with all kinds of goodies to satiate any visitor's souvenir wants.
